Why?

"Ram is as big a lie as big as the truth of the existence of the Ganges and the Himalayas"

"Even Valmiki has said that Ram was a drunkard. I urge Advani to get into a debate with me after reading Valmiki's Ramayana"

"Is there any proof of Ram having built the bridge, or that he had the engineering expertise… There was no person in the name of Ram. The story of Ram is authored by Valmiki in Ramayana. There are so many things that Valmiki has said about Ram"

"they showed the culture of Ram Bhaktas (worshippers). I treat these things like a speck of dust. I welcome such opposition"

After hearing all such filthy statements from a politician of national stature, only words that come to my mind after a few verbal abuses are 'Why?'

Why did 'Venerable' M Karunanidhi have to utter such words? Why could he not be a bit restrained and moderate instead of blatantly hurting the sentiments of millions of Hindus all over the world? Why on earth did he have to be so vocal about his 'atheistic' thoughts?

There is nothing wrong in being an atheist. But it does not mean that you do not show respect to people who believe in a religion. And especially this case has nothing to do with atheism also. These statements are purely motivated by political agenda.

Mr. Karunanidhi, you have shown us your real worth by publicly stating such trash things. Thank you for sharing with the whole nation your excellent knowledge about Hindu literature. But you know what? We actually do not need your expertise. We are not as powerful as you. And may be we are not as learned as you. But our parents have at least taught us to respect other people's feelings and sentiments. I wish you also had learned something like that.

Hey Bhavin...Calm Down ...In which world u r living??...

Buddy, in India it has become a common phenomena to abuse hindus and hindu Gods to show ur patriotism and to show tht u r secular..Does anyone ever doubt the existence of allah , mohammed payagambar or Jesus???..No one can speak abt them..Since godhra, I have accepted the truth tht we hindus r so impotent and we r so weak tht any tom, dick and harry will come and will abuse us...he will draw naked pics of our Hindu Gods and Goddess...he will doubt the existence of our Gods..he will destroy our temples and build his mosques and we hindus (- the most selfidh people of the world who believe tht if I am happy and I am secure then why do I care for other people) will do nothing against such ppl and will sit and watch TV in an air-conditioned room..

Tht's a real pity for India and today I can say tht i m ashamed to be a hindu...I dont want Jihad or I dont want to kill innocent ppl in the name of religion but atleast i should be strong enough to protect my religion and my faith so tht no aera-gera can abuse my religion...but tht is not the case...I ll never say tht i m pround to be a hindu..

Bhavin...I guess you're over-reacting. Everyone in India has the freedom to speech, be it us who believe in Ram and Hinduism, or be it Karunanidhi who takes an opposite stand. For every concept, there will always be believers and non-believers; proponents and opponents. And each person thinks from his/her perspective and voices opinions. These opinions are primarily "personal" (the real issue here is that some public figure voices his personal opinions, which is stupid), and thus shouldnt affect other people, as they have the full right to stand by their faiths.

Religion, especially the Hindu religion, has always been viewed as a political tool in our country. Our own politicians play the Divide-and-Conquer (that the Britishers imposed eariler) with us. India is a truly secular country, and you rarely see such debates/issues popping up in the day-to-day lives of the common people...the common people are more "spiritual" and less "religious". We never make friends by first analysing their religions and castes, right? We help anyone who's in need- we love and give irrespecive of the fact the other person is a Hindu or Muslin or Christian of Sindhi... It is only the politicians who model these issues and provoke the common people. Karunanidhi, is not as powerful as the people. He may be on the TV sets and on Podcasts, but that doesnt make him powerful. The real power lies with us, and I guess we Indians are being philanthropic and humanitarian and spiritual, and that is indeed a positive sign. And why care what Karunanidhi's parents taught him...that is too strong a statement for anyone to make. None of us have the right to pass on the blame to others, we must be solely responsible for or statements. We all talk relative to our experiences and our immediate (**political**) needs, and that is what Karunanidhi is doing.
You too, should respect other his sentiments, lol. :D

I respect your ideas. I am not an extremist. My only concern is, you need to show some responsibility when your statements are making so much impact on a vast majority of people. Everyone in one billion people is not as intellectual as you or me who can think with wisdom. And if such statements create unnecessary disturbance, what is the need for them?

There is a thin line between freedom of speech and malicious intent of denigrating a particular faith. Do you think he was trying to genuinely use his freedom of speech when he said it? I do not think so.

And Karunanidhi is definitely a very powerful man in Tamilnadu. If you are in touch with Indian politics, you will realize how much command he has over people down south.

About religion, I never argued with reference to it anyway. Some of my best friends are from different religions. All I am saying is, you have no right to attack someone's faith or speak bad about it. How would we feel if someone speaks bad about us or our family? Would you be even diplomatic in that and say that we are humanitarian and will not react? I would certainly not do that.

I will never be able to respect someone who himself does not have any respect for other people. I am not a saint and I accept it.

@Soham

I see agony of a common Hindu in your voice.
We are not saying that some religion is good or bad. All we want is Hindu religion also should be treated with respect along with other religions of the country.

I agree with you on most of the points. He was definitely not using his freedom of speech in a mature manner (In fact I did mention that this was his "personal" view and he shouldnt have made it public). I do agree that he has a good hold and influence in Tamilnadu. I'm not being diplomatic and don't respect his comments either.

The only point that I was making is at he is NOT AS powerful as the set of educated and sensible intellectuals in our country. At times, we must learn to ignore such political statements, as they dont concern the people directly and are primarily aimed at beaurocrats/fellow politicians (eg Advani, in this case) and have political implications. Such comments shouldn't create a stir in the Hindu community, and we should have the wisdom to understand his motives when he makes such a comment.

The views on religion were primarily inflenced by Soham's comment, where he mentioned that he isnt proud to be a Hindu. I am a proud Hindu, and had I been a muslim, I would have been a proud muslim. All religions are good and should co-exist. The evil can never conquer the world, we'll always have the goodness to counter it. A fine balance, you see. Thats what I meant.

There'll always be people who'd attack our faiths...we have to learn to live with them and we have to learn to hold on to our beliefs. Everyone out here is not ethically and morally correct, and the world is not a perfect world.

I wouldnt have bothered to react if someone would have spoken in a derogatory manner about my family/faiths. I know my people and my faiths well, and those who make bad remarks aren't even worth my hatred/concern, so I wouldn't care at all. You may have different opinions on this though.

PS: Wow! Its been ages since I've actually debated/discussed such issues, and I'm enjoying this. Its intellectually stimulating and refreshing (unlike that algos assign). Thanks!

Thanks Tapasya! It was indeed a nice discussion. :)
I see your point and I think you also see mine!
